European School of Oncology
OVERVIEW
The European School of Oncology (ESO) is an independently funded non-profit organisation dedicated to quality education and training, because we believe all patients deserve equal access to competent cancer care. The vision of ESO is to ensure that all cancer patients have access to unbiased and evidence-based competent care from adequately trained health professionals.
ESO was established in 1982 by the Italian cancer surgeon, Umberto Veronesi with the aim of contributing to the reduction of deaths from cancer due to late diagnosis and/or inadequate treatment. By improving the skills of all health professionals dealing with cancer patients, ESO helps shorten the time needed to transfer knowledge from research centres to daily practice, combining advanced technology with humanism in care.
Due to its financial independence, ESO has the rare privilege of being able to set its own priorities. It therefore pays particular attention to developing the transfer of knowledge in areas that are least supported by industry, such as surgery and in rare pathologies (including childhood tumours), and in countries and regions with limited economic resources.
Leading oncologists from around the world played a key role in founding of the School. Now, after 40 years, ESO is the oldest and most structured organisation exclusively dedicated to increasing the knowledge of health professionals in all fields of cancer medicine, under the auspices of an international scientific committee and advisory board.
ESO is involved in many activities to help educate oncology professionals including Masterclasses, Refresher courses, Fellowships, Certificate of Competence and Advanced Studies, Visiting Professorships, weekly e-sessions and online courses, to name just a few.
The School's partners, staff and supporters all over the world, including more than 1000 lecturers and experts and more than 20,000 alumni, continue to be crucial to the success of ESO.
