The first documented case of a secondary melanoma deposit was reported in 1787 by the Scottish surgeon John Hunter (1728–1793), although he never explicitly identified the disease as melanoma. Hunter's original specimen, No. 219, is preserved in the Hunterian Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The specimen was taken from a 35-year-old man who had a recurrent mass behind the angle of his lower jaw.
