Born in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England, William Sampson Handley worked at the cancer department at the Middlesex Hospital where he studies the ways by which cancer spread.

Handley had a big influence in the development of cancer surgery and his recommendations formed the basis for melanoma treatment for over 50 years.
