BIOGRAPHY
Robert Twycross is a retired British physician and writer. He was a pioneer of the hospice movement during the 1970s and played a crucial role in establishing palliative care as a recognized discipline within modern medicine.
After earning his MRCP, he became a Clinical Research Fellow at St Christopher’s Hospice in 1971, appointed by Dame Cicely Saunders. There, he conducted pivotal studies on morphine, diamorphine, and methadone for cancer pain management, which simplified pain treatment methods and replaced more complex options like the Brompton cocktail. This research earned him a Doctor of Medicine degree from Oxford University.
