BIOGRAPHY
A French physician, in 1816 René Theophile Hyacinthe Laënnec introduced the stethoscope to investigate the sounds made by the heart and lungs in order to determine diagnoses, supporting the observations made during autopsies.
Laënnec published the seminal book on the use of listening to body sounds, "De L’auscultation Mediate (On Mediate Auscultation»). Laënnec is considered the father of clinical auscultation and he was in favor of a specific classification of the different diseases.
