BIOGRAPHY
Pietro Bucalossi (1905-1992) obtained his degree in Medicine at the University of Pisa in 1927. He was the first director in the post war era of the Istituto Nazionale Tumori of Milan, the largest comprehensive cancer center in Italy, established in 1928.
Initially chief of the Surgical Division he directed the Institute from 1956 to 1974. Mayor of Milan, Member of the Chamber of Deputies, Minister of Public Works and then of Research, he wrote several oncological books with his protégé Umberto Veronesi [https://www.oncopedia.wiki/key-players/umberto-veronesi].
With his strong character imposed in the Institute, the uniformity of surgical procedures in various tumor types and the practice of interdisciplinarity. Through his action in 1968, a new bigger building could be developed in connection with the old one, thus allowing a considerable expansion of clinical activity.
