BIOGRAPHY
Jules-Émile Péan was a French surgeon.
Appointed as a doctor in 1861, he later founded an international hospital. He authored two volumes of private clinics.
Pean was the first to successfully perform a surgical ablation of an ovarian cyst in 1864.
He was also a pioneer in vaginal hysterectomy for malignancy (1890) and likely performed the first surgical correction of bladder diverticula (1893).
Additionally, he performed the first total joint arthroplasty (1893).
Pean also performed the first partial gastrectomy for cancer in 1879, although the patient died shortly afterward. He is renowned for inventing the hemostat, named after him, which remains a crucial surgical instrument.
