Joaquin Mateo

BIOGRAPHY

Mateo graduated in medicine from the University of Barcelona in 2006, later specialising in medical oncology, clinical trials design and drug development, and in 2017 he obtained a PhD in cancer genomics from the University of London and The Institute of Cancer Research.

The study of cancer genetics, particularly that of advanced prostate cancer, and precision oncology, are Mateo's main areas of research. As an expert in the field, and within the European Society for Medical Oncology´s (ESMO) Translational Research and Precision Medicine Working Group, of which he was chair, he contributed to the development of ESCAT, a tool that from genetic sequencing data identifies alterations that can be exploited for therapeutic purposes based on scientific evidence.

Since 2017, he has been Group Leader at the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO, Barcelona). He has won several awards, including twice the ASCO Cancer Conquer Foundation Merit Award, the Prostate Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award, the CRIS Cancer Foundation - Clinical Talent Award, the U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Physician Science Award and the Premio Jóvenes Investigadores Fundación AstraZeneca 2023.
