BIOGRAPHY
Herbert M. (Bob) Pinedo, MD, PhD, is professor-emeritus of Oncology at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) and Founder and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at the VU Medical Center (VUmc).
He is founder of the VUmc Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA). He is still practicing medical oncology. Bob’s honors are many, including the prestigious Josef Steiner Cancer Research Foundation Award, the Netherlands Spinoza Prize, and the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award of the ASCO.
In his honor the Pinedo Award for clinical cancer patient care was established in 2006. He is member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He was honored with the Commander in the Order of Orange Nassau.
Since 2008 he has been visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University. His curriculum vitae includes service on boards and committees of numerous international organizations, and more than 700 publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
He is co-founder of the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine in the Netherlands.
He was the first President of the European Cancer Organization (ECCO), and Past President of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO).
He is past Chairman of the International Advisory Committee of the VU Imaging Center. He is consultant to 7 biotechnology companies.
Last but not least, in 2009 he founded the Caribbean Prevention Center in Curacao.
