BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Coates graduates in medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1966.
He trains at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research in Australia, and the Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center in the US. Once back in Australia, from 1978 he works as medical oncologist in Sidney. In the same years he founds the Australian New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials, and actively collaborates with the IBCSG, for which he is co-chairman of the scientific committee.
In 1985, Dr. Coates is appointed associate professor in Cancer Medicine at the University of Sidney, where he becomes clinical professor for the School of Public Health and the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre starting 1998.
President of the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia in 1994 and 1995, he is also chief executive officer of the Cancer Council Australia from 1998 to 2006, and the first non-US member of the board of directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
